Your tower designs are due tomorrow. Here are the requirements for your design.

1. The height of your tower is equal to the stories of your tower (e.g. a 10 story building is 10 inches tall).
2. All 5 floor plates are in your design.
3. Floor plates are equally spaced with one on top.
4. All braces connect with the edges of the tower; they do not connect with the floor plates. Exception: if you are doing the large X design (which passes over a floor plate), then your braces may connect to the floor plate.
5. The short side of the foundation block is used. This means the base of your tower is about 101mm or 4 inches wide (this is the 2 pieces of balsa wood + the foundation block).

You will choose one person from your group to have graded (or you can all have your own graded; your choice!).

Today we formed our groups for the earthquake towers. Everyone selected their own groups (and people chose you!). The groups picked their bracing design and justified (verbally) their choice. They began drawing their designs and some will have them ready for tomorrow. You will check in with your groups tomorrow and help them finalize their designs or begin building your towers!

1. Have 121 completed for tomorrow so I can check it in.
2. Visit Wunderground Wilmette. Under the 10 day forecast (graph option), customize it so it shows: temperature, chance of precipitation, humidity, pressure, and wind speed.
3. Then, answer the following questions using the graphs it generates:
   a. Which variable(s) is/are correlated/connected with wind speed. How?
   b. Which variable(s) is/are helpful in predicting the chance of precipitation? How?
   c. What other variables appear to be connected? How?

Absent Students
Today we collected our final day of weather data, took an in-class reflection on the wind map, and started to analyze our weather data. Here's what you need to do:

1. Schedule a time with me to take the in-class reflection. It's 5 questions about identifying low and high pressures on the wind map.
2. Get the daily weather data for day 25 from a classmate from your period.
3. Follow the instructions for handout 121. Before you do, a few things you need to take care of on your daily weather data spreadsheet:
   a. Delete any units on your temperature, humidity, and pressure data. For example, if your data says 17 °C, you need to remove the °C from the number. Google won't know what to do with that.
   b. Organize your data so temperature, humidity, and pressure are next to each other on the spreadsheet. You can do this easily by clicking on a column and dragging it to the end of the data. For example, if you need to move wind speed, click and hold on the column for wind speed and drag it out of the way.
   
4. Answer questions 1-3 on page 2 of handout 121 by using your graphs. You can also use the graphs on Weather Underground. You will find the graph under the 10-day forecast. Although it is predicted data, it still shows the patterns we are attempting to discover. Customize the graph to show temperature, humidity, and pressure.

In class today we observed the conditions necessary to create a cloud. We read about the ingredients for a cloud: water vapor, a nucleation point (e.g. smoke or dust), and cooling temperatures.

We then discussed how we would model this in a 2L plastic bottle. We easily figured that the water vapor would come from hot water, nucleation could happen on smoke from a punk stick, and cooling the container could happen through a pressure change.

Next we had to predict which type of pressure change would result in a cooler temperature: low pressure or high pressure. The classes were divided on this. Students who said a high pressure did so because of our previous investigations: high pressure was created by using ice. Therefore, if we want the container to cool, we need to increase its pressure. Students who said a low pressure did so because of observations of where clouds appear: they most commonly seem to be near low pressure areas.

We then conducted the investigation and quickly found the answer. What I want you to do is complete the first part of handout 120: answer the pre-investigation questions and create your prediction. Then, check you prediction with a video of our investigation made with my students from last year. Did the cloud from under high pressure (squeezing the bottle) or low pressure (letting go of the bottle)? Use that to answer the remaining questions.
